Hamilton County Mortgage Taxes

Last Updated: August 2026

If you have a mortgage on a home in Hamilton County, you may see older information online about Indiana’s Mortgage Deduction. That deduction is no longer available.

Indiana repealed the Mortgage Deduction beginning with 2023 Pay 2024 property taxes. Having a mortgage by itself no longer provides a separate property tax deduction.

Quick Answer

There is no longer an Indiana Mortgage Deduction.

If you’re a Hamilton County homeowner with a mortgage, you should instead make sure you’re receiving any current property tax deductions or credits for which you qualify — especially the Homestead Deduction if the home is your primary residence.

What Happened to the Mortgage Deduction?

Indiana previously allowed qualifying homeowners with mortgages to deduct up to $3,000 from their property’s assessed value.

The Indiana General Assembly repealed that deduction effective January 1, 2023. Beginning with taxes payable in 2024, county auditors no longer apply the Mortgage Deduction.

That’s why you may still see Mortgage listed on older property records or tax statements, even though the amount is now $0.

Mortgage Escrow and Property Taxes

Even though there is no longer a Mortgage Deduction, your mortgage company may still collect property taxes through an escrow account.

If your taxes are escrowed, part of your monthly mortgage payment is generally set aside and your mortgage servicer pays the property tax bill when it’s due.

You can still check your Hamilton County tax bill and payment information yourself.
