Hamilton County Senior Property Tax Deductions & Credits

Last Updated: August 2026

Hamilton County homeowners age 65 and older may qualify for property tax relief through Indiana’s Over-65 Credit or Over-65 Circuit Breaker Credit.

Indiana recently discontinued the old Over-65 Deduction and replaced it with a credit, so older information you find online may no longer be accurate.

Quick Answer

Hamilton County currently offers two primary property tax benefits for qualifying seniors:

  • Over-65 Credit – up to $150 per year
  • Over-65 Circuit Breaker Credit – limits qualifying property tax increases to no more than 2% over the previous year’s liability

Applications are handled by the Hamilton County Auditor’s Office.

For someone applying in 2026 for taxes payable in 2027, the deadline is January 15, 2027.

Over-65 Credit

Indiana’s former Over-65 Deduction has been replaced with the Over-65 Credit.

The credit provides up to $150 per year toward qualifying property taxes.

To qualify, you generally must:

  • Be at least 65 by December 31 of the year before the credit is claimed
  • Have an ownership interest in the property
  • Meet the applicable income requirement

For the current program, federal adjusted gross income generally cannot exceed:

Individual: $60,000
Married couple: $70,000

Unlike the former deduction, the new Over-65 Credit does not have an assessed-value limit.

Over-65 Circuit Breaker Credit

Some Hamilton County seniors may also qualify for the Over-65 Circuit Breaker Credit.

This benefit can prevent property tax liability on a qualifying homestead from increasing by more than 2% over the previous year’s tax liability.

For applications filed in 2026 for taxes payable in 2027, Hamilton County lists income limits of:

Individual: $61,680
Married couple: $71,960

Beginning with 2026 Pay 2027, these income thresholds are adjusted annually based on the Social Security cost-of-living adjustment.

Check Hamilton County’s Over Age 65 page for current limits before applying.
