Replace a Lost or Stolen Indiana Driver’s License – Hamilton County

Last Updated: August 2026

If your Indiana driver’s license is lost, stolen or damaged, you can often order a replacement without visiting the BMV. Hamilton County residents can replace an eligible license through myBMV, at a BMV Connect kiosk or at a BMV branch.

Quick Answer

The easiest option is usually to order a duplicate license online through myBMV.

Your replacement will be an exact duplicate of your most recently issued license, so you cannot use a standard replacement transaction to change your name or residential address.

Replace Your Indiana Driver’s License Online

Can You Replace Your License Online?

Most Indiana drivers can replace a license online if they meet BMV requirements, including:

  • Your license is not expired.
  • Your name and residential address have not changed.
  • Your previous photo is on file.
  • Your driving privileges aren’t suspended or revoked.
  • You’re not changing from a non-REAL ID credential to a REAL ID.
  • Your license doesn’t have certain restrictions.

Indiana allows a credential to be replaced online a maximum of 10 times before you must visit a branch.

What You Need for myBMV

To create or access your myBMV account for a replacement, you’ll need:

  • Driver’s license number
  • Last four digits of your Social Security number
  • Legal ZIP code

If you don’t know your driver’s license number or can’t complete the transaction online, you may need to visit a BMV branch.

What If Your Address Changed?

There is an important difference between your mailing address and residential address.

You can update your mailing address online before ordering a replacement.

If your residential address has changed, you must visit a BMV branch to amend your license and provide the required residency documents. Indiana requires you to update your residential address within 30 days of the change.

What If Your Name Changed?

A replacement isn’t the correct transaction if you need a new name printed on your license.

You must first update your name with the Social Security Administration, wait at least one business day, and then visit an Indiana BMV branch with the required documents to amend your credential.

Lost Your License While Out of State?

If your Indiana license is lost or stolen while you’re outside Indiana, you may still qualify for online replacement.

If not, Indiana provides a 30-day interim credential that can allow you to return to Indiana and obtain a replacement.

How Long Until the New License Arrives?

Indiana mails permanent replacement licenses rather than printing the permanent card at the branch.

If your new credential hasn’t arrived within 14 days, the BMV says to call 888-692-6841. You can also track its progress through your myBMV account.

For an additional $25, the BMV offers Express Credential Service with prioritized processing and mailing for eligible transactions.

Local Tips

  • Try myBMV first before making a trip to the Noblesville branch.
  • Update your mailing address before ordering if the card needs mailed somewhere different.
  • A residential address change requires an amended credential, not simply a duplicate.
  • If your license is close to expiration, check whether renewing instead of replacing makes more sense.
  • If you need to upgrade to REAL ID, you’ll need to follow the REAL ID process rather than ordering an identical duplicate.
